Exploring Deep Space – Planetarium Production

Afterglow Studios had the great honor of producing a 24 minute dome film for the Institute for Creation Research’s 50th anniversary. This was a full-dome film production that will be part of their permanent film lineup. Produced in stunning 12k and projected on their 4K system, this planetarium production will give audiences an immersive experience for the whole family to enjoy. Using a VR approach, all environments were created in 360 to enable maximum post flexibility during the editing process. This enabled us to rotate the dome to the desired position in relation to audience seating for this particular venue. ICR has a state of the art 14 degree tilt dome in their newly constructed planetarium.

Afterglow was tasked with creating 3D environments for the different transitions. End shot was created from CAD models of the Mystic Lake campus structural model.

Touch The Stars traces the path to space through the history of NASA’s probes, orbiters, and landers, from the heart of our solar system to the surface of the other planets and moons, to the grand tour of the Voyager spacecraft through the outer planets and beyond.

Created with the latest imagery and scientific data, Touch the Stars uses inspiring real footage and 3-dimensional vistas of our solar system and interstellar space to transport audiences to planets and distant stars alongside these intrepid robot explorers.

Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center – Gala Opener

Afterglow Studios partnered with Sundog to design and animate this stunning event opening video for Sanford Hospitals. This video was created to be played during the Roger Maris Cancer Center Gala on a large wide aspect ratio wall. LensCrafters Clarifye 360

How do you create an emotional connection to eyewear? Help the viewer see what a child sees without his or her corrective lenses. To do so, Olson hired Afterglow Studios to create a 360º video representation of a real-world, real-vision situation.

The production:
We started with test shots of a mock classroom to determine the proper layout for the camera’s separation points to limit limbs getting cut off — a common occurrence in 360º video if not done correctly. Then, we shot, edited, and developed an environmental depth of field — something that didn’t exist in 360º video at the time — and rendered it for final viewing.

The result:
Once published on social channels, the Clarifye immersive video experience quickly became LensCrafters’ most-viewed piece of content ever. This video also won Best of Social, two silver pins and one bronze pin at the 2017 Minnesota advertising award show, The Show, and was recognized as an “Editor’s Pick” in Creativity Magazine.
